Light Up Your Day

Saturday, December 12, 2009

As the sun sets I want to say....what the heck? I just feel like I got dressed and did a bit of work and now it's night? The shorter days take their toll on me. I long for a bit more light.

My Idea:

Today you have to do a bit of work. Your chore is to light a candle. I don't care how many you light....it's your choice. How can something so simple bring so much calm and peace?

I keep a couple votives burning on my kitchen counter. It helps as I cook. Even in the mess of the pots and pans as I'm cooking, the candles make things seem more beautiful. I light them during the day as well as the evening. Their soft glow quiets everything down...the scented ones add a bit of spice to the atmosphere too. I usually only purchase vanilla scented candles as some of the others can be a bit much for me. You don't need a fancy candle holder....small votives are very sweet.

Make sure you add candle light to each of your meals! The glow of the light adds warmth and makes for more intimate meal times. Soup and salad seems like a feast under the candle light. Although these candle sticks look expensive....they were found at estate sales and at Curious Sofa for a reasonable price. I always buy my candles after Christmas on sale and save them for the next year.

Barb's Idea: Make sure you burn some pine scented candles. If you don't have a tree set up you can always smell the pine scent and pretend the tree is in the other room! (Darn that Barb! She always has the best ideas!)

Wishing you light and peace!

Until tomorrow,

Alma

  1. My nephew sent me some "Christmas Cookie" scented candles this year. They are a bit of vanilla with a hint of cinnamon...gives me the urge to bake! Thanks for the beautiful post...

  2. Yes! Yes! A lovely post - thanks for sharing. Two or three times this past week I put fresh tealights in my decorative burners and actually LIT them and it WAS delightful. Why do we practice denying ourselves such SIMPLE PLEASURE?

  6. I love candles, and scented candles too. I don't need pine ones though -- we have a real tree in our livingroom. Smells great!

  7. Candles do bring peace and calm I burn them around the fireplace in the shop, and some I use to heat the fragrant 'wax melts'. While my DH is away I burn one for him every night, it's a comfort thing.
p.s. I love your samplers xx

Your red wall with samplers is gorgeous! I love a red room. My kitchen is painted red, and it's so fun to be in.

  11. I'm up early in the mornings and it seems so long before the sun is up- I light a candle or two to enjoy as I drink my coffee and read the newspaper.

I also love the red wall with the samplers but everything looks beautiful and speaks of quiet and peace.

  14. Oh, you make it sound so festive! I remember the beautiful scents that candles can bring, but it's been so long since I've lighted one. Unfortunately we had a little incident a month or so ago while a babysitter was watching our kids. Let's just say I now have a nice burn mark up the side of one of my new cream kitchen cabinets. My husband thinks another 15 minutes of the candle going and they would have caught on fire...Anyways, just make sure your candles aren't 3 inches from anything flamable. Not to ruin the idea or anything. I really do think they are wonderful and can add so much to the ambiance! My little boy just told our babysitter that he "lights candles all the time!" Not so!

  15. It's been a long time since I put up a real tree (real trees don't last all that long here in Florida), but each year I stop at the local Christmas tree lot just to get a whiff of all that lovely pine! :) Burning a pine-scented candle sounds like a wonderful idea, too.

  16. What lovely pictures - lately I've been burning small tealights too - the vanilla scent mingles with the scent of lavender buds as I make sachets to fill orders - heavenly scents and so calming....
Thanks again for the lovely glimpses of your home.

  17. Everything looks so peaceful and beautiful - very lovely post. I too love having votives lit for no other reason to just have them lit. No fregrance needed, just soft flickering glows is soothing.

  18. Oh I love candles! I just lit one in the kitchen, dining room and living room. It's a gray day outside but they add such a cozy glow. I love the outdoorsy scents as well as the spice ones and floral (but of course not all at once). Your pics are beautiful!

  19. My husband even lights candles in our house, we enjoy them everyday! I love coming home to lit candles, it is so warm and inviting. When people stop by they always comment on how good our house always smells. Can you tell me the name of the sampler on the right upper side of your mantle? Also the one in the bottom left hand side!!! So beautiful!!! They are all so pretty.

  20. I love the vanilla scented candles too, but I might have to try Barb's idea about the pine scented candles.
I love how you have decorated your mantle. Isn't the Curious Sofa such a fun place to shop? Next time you know of a good estate sale nearby let me know.

  22. excellent! I've actually done pretty well this year - not exactly where I want to be, but much better than last year - next week, aside from decorating, which I actually enjoy, and making some cookies, which I also enjoy - I just might look at a magazine, say isn't that nice...and turn the page!

  23. What a lovely idea! I have just a few, but I hardly ever light them. Will make mental note to change that! Thanks for the inspiration!

  24. Alma, check out this blog: http://www.funwithbarbandmary.blogspot.com/ and see more great covered boxes. Bought candles today, and will light them tonight as I warm up some leftovers which I know will taste much better with the candlelight. Happy Holidays!
