All my family gatherings involve food....and lots of it. With 4 hungry children I had to cook a lot. (They are grown now....but the boys still can eat quite a bit.) When Thanksgiving come along my family wants the same dishes each year. Grill the trukey, make mounds of mashed potatoes and gravy and of course, the pecan pie. I can add a new vegetable dish each year and get away with it...but the other items are required. I began a cooking journal years ago. Each recipe is recorded according to the event. When I hosted a baby shower I wrote down the recipe for everything served. Whey my sister came to visit, the new recipes cooked for her family were carefully recorded. Sometimes it’s hard to find the recipe I want because of my filing system. I have to remember when I first cooked it. Not always easy to do! This book is a 10 year record of family events and what was cooked to celebrate. My favorite soup recipe, my Dad’s ice cream recipe, my Grandmother’s cottage cheese salad recipe are all recorded here.

I love collecting old vintage recipe boxes. Especially if they are full of old recipe cards. I feel like I have entered into another woman’s private world. Personal notes ....recipes shared by friends...newspaper cutouts are all packed into a small tin box.
Ok.....I confess....maybe 3 tin boxes!!! I know I have too many now...but I just couldn't help myself. I
But now to the point of all of this....I found a new journal at Borders. It's filing system is a bit better. Sorted according to the kind of dish....not the event. I'm going to begin filling this one soon! I will post a picture of the journal tomorrow. I don't quite have the blog thing figured out just yet. This program won't let me post another picture now. Maybe I have met my picture limit? Tomorrow dear friend!

Happy stitching! Alma

  1. Welcome to blogging, Alma! Let us know how the new filing system works out. I am on my 3rd try of a recipe system/book. I am too undisciplined and messy, not to mention I keep outgrowing them. Right now it is an accordian file/portfolio. I have enough room - but it is still a struggle to find what I want, when I want it. Lovely book, box and photos!

  4. Sorting recipes by event may make it hard to find something immediately, but what a wonderful record of your family history!

  6. You're so creative -- even your recipe book has to be gorgeous! lol! As for pictures for your blog, I believe you can just click add a picture again and go through the process one more time. It seems there's a 5 picture limit per upload, but you can just do another upload, if you see what I mean.

  7. I just found your blog thanks to Laurie Simpson. I am glad you are blogging. I've enjoyed several of your posts. In your April 3 post you have a picture of several recipe boxes. The one in front is the same box my mother used. I have it now and all her recipes. It brings back great memories. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
