Living in Denver part-time is quite fun for my husband and me. Our grandson is keeping us busy! We have new places to explore, and a new climate to adjust to. Our snow fall today has made me glad I purchased our turkey a couple of days ago! So much snow...just makes one want to stay inside where it's warm and dry.
Barb has designed and stitched this sweet pincushion just right for the season! His black paper mache hat keeps him safe when not in use. This one will ship out to the distributors tomorrow. Should be in your local cross stitch shop after Thanksgiving!
I made these gingerbread birds this past week from an antique cookie board I purchased last year. I can't even begin to tell you how much it cost.....but I had never seen one like it, and I love making these springerle-like cookies. I have quite a few molds and love them all! (All right.....it's an addiction.)
Today I made some almond toffee....although the recipe called this recipe a brickle. I can't figure out the difference....what is a brickle? Is it toffee?
I thought these sweet birds made the best gift tags. Really any shape of a gingerbread cookie would be sweet.
The recipe is from this 2012 Land O Lakes magazine. They no longer publish cookie recipe magazines. But I have about 4 of them, so maybe Land O Lakes think they have written enough about Christmas cookies. I do use Land O Lakes butter though, as the water content is lower. But any butter would work here, so not to worry.
I usually write the date I've made something and any notes that help with the recipe in all of my cookbooks and magazines. It helps me later, and I think of these as personal cooking journals. You can tell I first made this in 2015 and was surprised how easy it was. The paper wrinkles show I've made this recipe quite a bit. Just glad the pages haven't stuck together yet! I can hardly get to my pecan pie recipe because of accidental drips and drops on the page. I've had to tear my Betty Crocker pages carefully apart a couple of times.

I did change this recipe a little. My changes are noted below in parentheses.

Here's the recipe: Make sure you read over all the steps before beginning.

1 cup slivered blanched almonds
1 tsp. Land O Lakes butter, melted
1 1/2 tsps. of coarse ground black pepper (I used just 1 tsp.)
1/2 tsp. sea salt or coarse grain salt
2/3 cup Land O Lakes butter
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon corn syrup
(I add 1/2 tsp. almond extract after taking the toffee off of the heat source.)

1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 15" x 10" x 1" jelly roll pan with foil, and extend over the edges.
2. Combine the almonds with the 1/2 tsp. of melted butter in a small bowl. Toss to coat. Spread onto the pan. Sprinkle the pepper and salt over the almonds. Bake, stirring once or twice, until the nuts are lightly toasted....about 12 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, combine 2/3 cup butter, sugar and corn syrup in a heavy 3 qt. saucepan. Cook over medium hear, stirring occasionally, until the mixture comes to a boil and the sugar is dissolved.
Reduce the heat to low. (You don't have to stir much after you reduce the heat. It continues to do fine on its own.) Cook until the candy thermometer reaches 300 degrees. Remove from the heat and stir in the toasted almonds. (I add the 1/2 tsp. almond extract here also.)
4. Stir the mixture well and pour onto the same foil-lined pan; spread to a thin layer. Cool and break into pieces.

I made two batches....enough to share and have a couple pieces left for me too! I didn't double the recipe though. I made each batch separately.

Happy baking!
Until later,
Mix a few birds in with some scrappy baskets of flowers, and you have folk art at its best! Notice how the sweet plaids make the burgundies and blues pop. This quilt would be the perfect accent for any room in your home. Barb used a fat quarter pack of "At Home,"our latest fabric line with Moda Fabrics. She added yardage of several other prints and the look is fun! I'm always surprised how much I love the blue and red and burgundy leaves. It's nice when they don't all have to be green.
The appliqué shapes are large and simple, making this a quick and easy project. "A Little Flower" is a 60" square.
Below is pictured # 5 in our Loose Feather series, For the Birds. The same color palette helps to make sure they go together well. "Sing a Song of Seasons" is at the printer and will be picked up on Monday. Then off to the distributors, and they will be ready for you hopefully by the end of next week. I'm working on # 6 now. I know we have missed a couple of months publishing this series. I've had a couple of delays.
Pictured below is one reason for my delay. My daughter Laura got married earlier this month. Tyson is now our son-in-law and we couldn't be happier!

The second reason is our dog Corey. He got away from me at the park during one of our walks. He chased a deer and broke his elbow. He had to have surgery and Dave and I have tried to keep him quiet for the last 4 weeks. I just started walking him again for short periods of time. That darn dog!!!

The pattern pictured below was released last month. I didn't get a chance to post it earlier. This design was done by Barb and I love her sense of humor. The cat and birds seem to be very friendly! Corey my new dog, says we need to design one with a dog now. He's assured me, he loves birds! (Maybe for dinner.)

All the Hills Echoed, number #4 should be in your local shop now.

I know we haven't exactly keep to the every month scheme ....but summer happens! My vegetable garden has been calling to me this year. I've grown about a thousand Roma tomatoes and been making and freezing tomato soup and other "all things tomato." My freezer is almost full. I also took a week off to ride my bike along the Katy Trail in Missouri. My friend Becky volunteered to go with me but in truth, I rode mostly about 1/4 mile behind her the whole way. She is in better shape than me. We rode a bit over 200 miles. I'm ready to go again if you can believe it! If you want to go just let me know.

Barb and I have been teaching more this year too. We love traveling and seeing all of you!

And, to top everything off, my daughter Laura is getting married in Denver! I haven't had to do much as she and Tyson have planned everything. We just send checks! October 7th is their day....so much fun coming up!

The pattern below is the newest one in our Christmas Series. It is adapted from an antique piece that captured my eye. The large floral border is my favorite part. This was such an easy stitch. This one will be in shops very soon.

I have to share two photos from my bike ride too. Becky is posing in front of this enormous rock. She's looking really glad to have biked so far! After taking her picture, I was going to do the same pose. Then, I noticed something under the stone's ledge. (Look just behind Becky's right foot.)
The Light Upon the Lawn is our newest Loose Feathers pattern. (Second in the series) It's on its way to the printer today, and shipping out to the distributors in a weeks time. The floss colors are the same as last month's palette, and I think one set of floss should be enough to do two of these small samplers.
The title of this pattern is inspired by Emily Dickenson’s poem, ‘A Light Exists in Spring’. In the poem she speaks of the light in spring being colored differently than the rest of the year. I loved the idea of spring light awaiting on the lawn ... ready for us to come outside and view the landscape. You can read her poem here.
Last weekend Barb and I traveled north for Stitchville USA's retreat in Minnesota. We had a lovey time! Great women, venue and food! Can't beat that combination! This trip really got me thinking about spring.
After we had driven about 250 miles north, I noticed the landscape had changed. No trees were in bloom and no buds on the trees. I told Barb we could experience about 6 springs a year. Start in the south and slowly travel north over a period of 10 weeks. Might be the perfect bike trip. I digress here....anyway someone from the retreat asked me how we come up with some of the pattern titles. It got me thinking that Barb and I should share how we name our patterns.
I had to wake Corey up for this picture. After our morning walk, he has been sleeping by my chair helping me work. Well....he's not really helping .....he's just lovely companionship. Look at those droopy eyes! Not to worry about any lack of sleep on his part...he's already snoring again.

Until later!

My oldest son and I walk dogs at Wayside Waifs for a couple of hours each week. It's a time we enjoy spending together. We are working on our fourth year of volunteering. Each time we walk 3 - 4 dogs a mile, giving them a chance to get out, get some affection and work out some of the stress of being cooped up. Last month we found Corey, aka Dozer, in the holding area. The staff at Wayside Waifs worried he had ring worm and had isolated him.
Andy and I fell in love with him. I went home and told my husband I wanted to get him ring worm for his birthday. After he met Corey, he couldn't resist. I think this dog is about the best birthday gift I've given to him.
He's getting to pose on one of my favorite hooked rugs. I'm only letting him perch here for a photo! This rug was made by Sandy Williams and I don't want anything happening to it!!!
Don't be fooled by his sweet look though! He's turned out to be a dirty, sneaking, lying thief. When I'm not in the kitchen he jumps up to see what's in reach on the counter tops. Last week he got a stick of butter, and this week he got a helping of tuna fish! I'd take him back ....but I seem to like him in spite of his bad ways.
I love to begin a new project to celebrate the holiday after the rush of the season is over. All is quiet, no more gifts to buy or make, and there are enough leftovers to keep us going for a while.
An antique sampler by J. Mair’s was the inspiration for my newest Christmas design, Feliz Navidad. This is the second in our Christmas Sampler Series. The first one was published in 2012.

Each of Barb’s grandnieces and nephews initials are stitched into this sampler. Now she has a permanent record of the next generation of her family. An alphabet chart is included so you may replace her family’s initials with yours. Also included in this chart is a pattern for a heart pincushion. This sampler is based on an antique piece too. I love how the frame comes up right to the last stitch....very much as it would have been framed long ago.
Hats off to Uncle Sam was a class piece we had taught last year. The drum pincushion fits inside the hat box. Instructions for the had and pincushion are included inside the pattern. The pincushion is stitched on Murky linen by Picture This Plus. I love everything about this small pincushion. I'm going to have to stitch one for myself!
This Winter is Past was my favorite stitch of the year. It was stitched on Picture This Plus - Oaken linen. (A new color released at market.) I decided to use Weeks Dye Works blue and brown/gray shades. I guess it was my favorite because everything just seemed to come together just right. A lot of times, I have to take floss out and replace it with another to get it right. Feels like I'm stitching each piece twice. The linen looks lighter here than it really is, because I use a white mat board backing. The splotchy color of the linen gives dimension to the sampler.
This is the first pattern of our new Loose Feather Series for 2017. We are framing all of them in the same frame as pictured above. We plan to hang all of them together on the wall. Each of the nine in the series, celebrates our fine feathered friends. We will release one each month until the series is completed. Each will be the same square size. The floss colors are from Weeks Dye Works and will all be in a similar colorway. The next linen used will be Picture This Plus - Ale, and the third one will use Oaken.

I've just finished getting our newest quilt book to the printer and it will be ready to ship out Friday and Monday.
Here's a sneak peak at the cover.
Pat Cross sent a picture of her wonderful hooked rug. It reminded me how little Barb and I talk about how our designs can be translated into other formats. Our latest quilt book, The Raven, is inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s poem. Each block’s name is taken from a bit of Poe’s poetry. But, as Pat has shown us, quilt blocks translate very well into hooked rugs.

The cross stitch sampler above was originally adapted from a quilt block pattern from our quilt book Home Sweet Home. Barb changed 6 of the blocks from the 9 block quilt into cross stitch patterns. It's a little different from the block in the book....but still basically the same design.

"Merry Christmas Ella Vaughn" was adapted from the far right block in the middle row.
Our newest quilt booklet is finished and is available now. The booklet is inspired by the colors and shades of late summer/early autumn, and these two quilts are our favorites. Although one is pieced and the other is appliquéd, they look smashing together.
Barb and I made this quilt this summer for our local homeless organization, Community Link. It was quilted by Lori Kukuk from Lawrence, KS. Didn't she do a fabulous job? It is going to be auctioned off this October 1 to benefit homeless families. Everyone needs a home and I thought this quilt from our book Home Sweet Home was the perfect one to make for this benefit. Please e-mail Leah at llampkins@communitylinc.org if you are interested in making a bid. We would love for it to go to a good home!!!
Eddie used the featured pattern from our book Garden Club to make his quilt. I went back through my files and took a look at our pattern again to compare his to mine. His use of the dark background really makes his applique elements shine. Makes me want to do this pattern again using his color way. His fabric choice is so appealing. Take a look at his quilting too, as he has a long arm machine and does his own quilting.

The theme of the book featured a group of women who had formed a garden club in Polk, Nebraska. My grandmother was one of them. Each block was named for a woman in the club. Above is a picture of some of the women and their meeting notes. I had forgotten I had so many of these pictures in my file. After finishing a book, I'm on to the next project. So it was nice to revisit the theme of this book and the patterns.
Many thanks Eddie!
Let's get going!
What you need:
2 Hyde Park Jellyrolls
1/2 yd. each of three green prints
1 1/4 yd. of another green print (Use for sashing rectangles, binding and one 2 1/2" strip.)

The block

Instructions for the 16 blocks:
Grab a purple, pink or blue strip and cut 16 - 2 1/2" squares.
Grab a light strip and cut 21 - 2 1/2" squares. (I stack my strips and cut a couple of them at a time.)

Nine-patch block

Make 4 nine-patch blocks. If you have a 1/4" guide on your pressure foot, use it! It really helps make the piecing accurate.

Pick up a green strip from the jellyroll pack, and cut 4 - 2 1/2" x
6 1/2" lengths. Sew the block together as illustrated below.

Repeat for 16 blocks. Use the pink, purple and blue fabrics for these blocks. Each block is a 14" square. (finished) Save the brown prints for later.

Instructions for the Sashing:
Cut 24 rectangles 6 1/2" x 14 1/2" from an assortment of your green prints.
Cut 96 - 2 1/2" squares from the brown prints in your jellyroll strips. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse side of each square for the seam line. Align the square, right sides together, in a corner of the green print rectangle. Sew on the drawn line. Trim the excess leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat for all four corners.

Hyde Park, our newest fabric line with Moda Fabrics, is on it's way to your local quilt shop!

Every time we do a fabric line I find some favorites. These sweet cross stitch borders are arranged on this print as a stripe. It's so reminiscent of those antique samplers we love.

Hyde Park also has a sampler print done in several colorways. My favorite is this sweet pink print. I use these reproduction sampler prints over and over in my applique quilts. The letters add a great textural background to applique shapes, and remind me of the school work done by young women. (I did iron this...but doesn't look like I did a very good job.)

Barb and I got together and made this quilt from our Hyde Park fabric line right before quilt market. It only takes 2 jelly rolls, 1/2 yd. each of three green prints and 1 1/4 yd. of another green print which is used for the binding. The diagonal pattern movement of this scrappy quilt really captures your eye! The pattern is so easy and quick to sew, just 16 blocks plus the sashing. Look here, on the blog for the pattern this weekend.

Until later!
The third pattern pictured below begins our new Garden Club series.

Basket of Cherries

Welcome to our Garden Club! You’re going to love belonging to our little sewing circle. There are no offices to fill, and no elections to hold. So you will be able to sit back, stitch and enjoy yourself.

In the next 12 months, our Garden Club series will reflect a cherished aspect of gardening. It might be a lovely basket of flowers, bees buzzing from flower to flower, or, like this month, an abundant harvest of cherries. In any case, you won’t have to worry about getting your hands dirty!

On the back cover, you will find our Basket of Cherries made up as a pincushion. But if you’d rather, you can wait and stitch all 12 projects into one large sampler.

One pattern will be released each month for a year. The picture above shows the front and
back cover of the first pattern. All 12 pieces are stitched on 32ct. Weeks Dye Works linen. Each pattern uses a different color of
linen. Basket of Cherries was stitched on 32ct. Cocoa. Each piece in the
series is a 4" square.
On the back of the pattern cover you can note the first three
samplers of the series sewn together.

We've used different linens and sewn them together in some of our patterns before. Above is "Flea Market Souvenir". (This one is sold out.) After piecing quilts, I thought, why not do the same with linen?

I'm sorry for the lack of posting this summer. I wish I had a good excuse.....but alas there is none. I've been visiting my daughter in Denver, riding my bike, playing the piano and visiting the beach. Hope you all have had a wonderful summer too!
Can you find me? I'm the queen of this hive. (The small blue dot on my

the blog today, and I'm just your "take charge" kind of gal.
My workers have been busy coming and going from the hive.
There has been plenty of nectar this spring for my workers to bring back
to the hive and make into honey.
No quilts for us over the winter! My workers form a cluster around me
and the brood, keeping us warm. As it gets colder, my workers begin
to shiver. They vibrate their flight muscles to raise their body
temperatures. The center of all this activity can get pretty
warm....about 93 degrees F. When a worker gets cold she just moves into
the center of the group to warm up.
Spring quilt market is rapidly approaching (May 15-17) and while my
workers and I are busy with our "Garden Party," Alma and Barb have been
planning a small party of their own. Since their new line of fabric
"Hyde Park" will be shown to shop owners in July, they are going to take
a working break.....and wouldn't I like one too! (After laying 2,000
eggs each day, believe you me, I'm ready to kick back a bit.)
Barb and Alma are going to the beach the first week of May.
(Above you can see the only beach we get to go to. As if the bird bath
is even close to the same thing. Sometimes life just isn't fair!) They
are going to have a "Plum Sweet" time. Alma says she will be posting
from the beach letting everyone know what they are up to ....so be sure
to check back next week.
Guess what will be sailing your way? We now have an agreement with Sony ATV and can release this pattern. I'd have to say, the process of negotiating with Startling Music Ltd. and Sony ATV was very easy. I'm grateful to say the least. Dave and I were able to keep our house and car. (Just kidding!)
Paul McCartney wrote this song and he made it a point to use short words and phrases when he wrote it. It was intended to be a fun children’s song with lyrics that kids could easily pick up. I think this piece would be very sweet in a child's room. Barb's vine along the top is perfect for ocean waves.
I got the flu for Christmas. I wanted to post this earlier, but really, I could hardly drag myself out of bed. Luckily, I'm recovered and none of my kids got it from me! Although I wasn't much fun this year. Lots of hand washing and not much kissing during the holidays. Even though these pictures are late, I'm still sharing them with you. I took this platter to my friend's house for a luncheon and wanted to add a bit of color and thought, "Why not add ornaments for a bit of sparkle and panache." I washed the bulbs a bit (had to be careful as they are vintage) and added them randomly among the cookies.

All of the recipes are from Sweet Paul - Winter 2014.
Click the Magazine tab on his top menu, and it will take you to this issue. You can view it on-line for free....but I always purchase my copy from Anthropologie. His cookies were very tasty and looked spectacular. This issue seemed "all about making me look talented and creative." And I'm all about supporting anyone who makes me look good! Thanks Paul!!!!
Hope you are all staying well and warm. It's cold here today.
Until later dear friends,

Since the very beginning of Blackbird Designs, Barb’s mother, Leona, has been there to help with our projects and make sure we meet our deadlines. She probably feels like she’s sewn on a million yards of binding in the middle of the night!

From applique to pincushions and more, she’s done it all with good humor and kind reassuring words.

Barb used the wooden box by Stephanie Elmer of Lone Elm Lane to frame the piece celebrating her mother. The Queen Crown Box has a design area of 6" x 6".
Inside the box is a wooden insert, just right to hold these two pinkeeps.

The pattern has just been printed and I'm picking it up today. It wiill ship out to our distributors on Monday and will be in your local cross stitch shop soon!

I've been terrible about posting to this site. Barb and I are just busy... busy... busy! We are finalizing everything for a new quilt book which will be out this spring. My studio room is torn up. I decided to remodel right before Christmas and trying to get ready for the holidays. The fun never ends here.

Will post more soon!!!
This pattern is the fourth of six celebrating the golden anniversary of the Beatles’ first televised performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Although not the last to be released, Abbey Road was the last album the Beatles recorded as a group. Octopus’s Garden is one of the most charming songs included in the album. It was the second song that Ringo Starr had written with the Beatles and some critics say it was his best.
Barb and I are wrapping up here. We leave tomorrow for quilt market. We don't have our own booth this time, we will be in the designer's line-up in the Moda booth. Come by and see us!
Hope you are all have a chance to get out and enjoy this lovely autumn weather!
I love old quilt blocks. Their faded colors and whimsical use of prints are always interesting to me. I fell in love with quilting while in nursing school. I took a quilt class, and forever after, the colors, textures and patterns of quilt blocks have been a passion. I think the best part of the design process is picking out the fabric. Putting prints and colors together always are a source of new ideas. So many fabrics and so little time.

At spring quilt market, the Moda designers all made the same pattern with their fabric. Click on the link for the pattern. Barb and I didn't attend the market, but still wanted to participate in the blog hop. This design is calling my name and I think I will begin it this weekend. The
quilt looks so easy and quick to make. Charm packs and layer cakes work great for this project. Click on the link to get your free pattern.

Of course there is a contest too. Sept. 13 is the end of the blog hop and we are drawing two names to win some fabric. We have a Jelly Roll and a Fat quarter pack in our Autumn Lily fabric just waiting for you. Leave a comment and let us know what is your favorite Moda precut....Layer cake, Charm Pack or Mini charms.
Barb has loved the Beatles music since she was a teen, and wanted to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. She designed 6 patterns and named them for some of the songs she loved. One was “Octopus’s Garden” by Ringo Starr (under his real name Richard Starkey.) Her mistake was adding some of the song’s lyrics to the pattern. We both know better and certainly didn’t mean to disrespect and violate the creative rights of the people who have brought so much joy and fond memories to our lives. This pattern is on hold and will not be shipped out until we hear from Startling Music LTD. I've written a letter to them and will wait to hear what we need to do to make it right.
Also, we didn't realize another pattern we released "Yellow Submarine" is trademarked. I have contacted a Senior Licensing Analyst at Sony/ATV, and sent a copy of the pattern for them to view. This pattern is also on hold until I hear from them.
I feel the need to apologize to all of you. Our goal is to publish great and fun patterns for you to stitch, but we certainly don't want to hurt others in the process. We have let you down. I wish I had a good excuse for our stupidity....but I have none. What were we thinking? Certainly we need to do better research before releasing a series like this, and in the future we will do so. Please know we are contacting the companies injured, and trying to make this right.
We would like to thank our friend Cathe A. Ray, Proprietor of Needle In A Haystack for contacting us and letting us know of our violations. Thank you Cathe! We always want a chance to correct our mistakes before getting the "go to jail" card. (I'm making light of the "go to jail" card....but please know Barb and I are really sick about this.)

Below are our new releases from market: The first three celebrate Halloween.
